2012 Mayan Prophecy
By: Abby Isadora Haydon
THERE IS NO PROPHECY WRITTEN BY THE ANCIENT MAYA THAT SAID THE WORLD IS GOING TO END ON 12/21/2012.
Now that we have that out of the way, it is important to realize that the idea that the world is going to end is an assumption that has become what is called Common Knowledge. This is the concept that ideas that are not true pass by word of mouth until people accept the falsehood as truth. This is the case with the idea that the world is going to end on 12/21/2012.
This concept manifested from an assumption about the writing of a man named Michael Coe. He wrote a prominent book called The Maya in 1960.
In the book he conveyed that stone carvings at Mayan ruins did not have any dates after 12/21/2012. Mr. Coe stated that the Mayan Calendar ends on that date.
From that information people started to assume that the world was going to end because the Mayan calendar ended. Now, at the writing of this book in 2010, it is clear that many people, particularly after seeing the disaster flick 2012, are in fear that the end of the world is on it’s way.
In truth, there is no written Mayan record that states that the world is going to end on that date. There are carvings on the walls of the ruin of Palenque that have dates that go past the year 4000 ad.
We can only make assumptions about why one of the several Mayan calendars stops at the Winter Solstice of 2012.
What About 12/21/2012 ?
The foundation of the Mayan culture was the belief in cycles of time. The Tzolkin, which is the oldest Mayan calendar, repeats itself every 9 months.
The Long Count calendar, that has the end date 12/21/2012 is really a measurement of the 25,000 year cycle called the procession of the equinoxes. That is why the Long Count calendar ends on the winter solstice of 2012. The documentation of this extremely long cycle of time was a great achievement for a culture that practiced human sacrifice.
The Mayans were able to make detailed calculations about the minor cycles within the procession of the equinoxes. Much of their calculations and knowledge about astronomy was lost when the Spanish invaded the lands of the Maya and burned much of their literature.
Their real intention of the Long Count calendar will never be known. It is from the Long Count calendar, a different calendar than the astrology calendar or Tzolkin, where the predictions are found.
Bruce Scofield, the author of ‘Signs of Time’, states that:
‘For the Maya, life was an ongoing succession of individual time periods each of which had a predictable quality. Knowledge of time was at the basis of their astrology, theology, cosmology and history. For them, the purpose of life was to conform to the sky rhythms that had created time and to reflect in daily life and in their civilization the orderliness of cyclic repetitions.’…..’ It becomes clear that the Maya always expected history to repeat itself.’ Mr. Scofield states again ‘Clearly, history was understood to be a pattern that repeated itself on many time levels.’ ‘Mesoamerican astrologers saw history and destiny as constantly repeating itself.’
When you take a look at their culture and belief in cycles, it is only logical to assume that this 25,000 year cycle will repeat itself. The Tzolkin repeats itself every 260 days, so wouldn’t this longer cycle also repeat itself? My own feeling is that the Maya documented this major cycle of the planet. Once they recorded it, they knew it was going to recycle. Why continue to document it?
As you will see from the following information, a great crisis, earth changes and global disaster will probably not take place in 2012. It is the time period after 2032, when this is more likely to transpire.
The Katun
The fundamental period of time for the Maya is the twenty year cycle, known as the Katun. The prophecies that go along with these segments of time are found in several of the few surviving books on the culture. Much of what we know about the Maya including these prophecies, were written by the Spanish.
A prophecy is attached to each of the twenty year Katun cycles.
Each cycle starts on the day of the Ancestors, or Ahau as Ancestors is called to the Yucatec Maya. The first 20 year cycle starts with the number 11 Ahau.
Then there are 12 other Ahau periods of 20 years that have a prophecy attached to it. Most of these prophecies have been translated to be rather harsh. I will just show the time periods and prophecies that relate to us.
At the time of writing this in 2011 we are now in the 4 Ahau cycle that goes from 1993 to 2012. The prophecy for this cycle is compiled by Mr. Scofield from three different sources. These phrases are a composite take from the Book of Chilam Balam of Chunayel, the Codex Perez and The Book of Chilam Balam of Mani.
Ahau 4
Food scarcities. Half the katun good, half bad. The return of Kukulkan.
During this present time period, as we can witness from the world economy, half of this time was a time of prosperity. The economy started to go sour around the 2007. From that time on, the economy has been in a fragile state.
The Return of Kukulkan
The legend of Kukulkan is also the legend of Quetzalcoatl. The legend goes that this king of the Maya had succumbed to debauchery. One day he decided to pay for his sins and sailed out into the ocean on a flaming boat. The gods forgave him and he was reborn. He came back to the Maya on a boat from across the waters.
This Katun prediction implies that a great hero will come from across the waters to heal the problems of the people. It was during one of the 4 Ahau time periods, between 1480 and 1500 that Christopher Columbus came to the continent of the Americas from across the waters like Kukulkan.
It is during this katun, from 1993-2012, that Barack Obama has taken on the task of trying to heal the social and economic woes of the United States. He was born on an island and came over the water to the United States. He has his faults, as many will tell you, but he did win the Nobel Prize.
Mr. Scofield said in his book, which was published in 1994, that ‘The Maya thought this katun brought scarcities and the arrival of great leaders. It is also the katun of remembering knowledge and writing it down.’ As someone who works in a New Age bookstore, I can attest that there has been an explosion of many books on spiritual teachings in the past 10 years.
The New Katun In 2012
The prophecy for the katun that will start in 2012 and goes to 2032. The 2 Ahau, is described by Bruce Scofield as ‘For half the katun there will be bread, for half water. The end of the word of God.’
Mr. Scofield goes on to interpret this as saying that for the first half of the katun there will be prosperity, for half survival. This may mean that the world economy will recover in the first part of this Katun.
This katun brings the end of the word of God. It was during this Katun, that went from 1500 ad to 1520 ad, that the conquest of the Maya by the Spanish took place.
Cortez landed in Mesoamerica in 1519 ad.
It was a time when the Maya lost their gods and had to adapt to the Christian god.
The end of the word of God is taken to mean, by Mr. Scofield, that there will be a tapering off of printing spiritual books.
Katun Ahau 2 is also a time of uniting for a cause.
Mr. Scofield also says of this period ‘Quite possibly some of our most taken -for-granted beliefs, secular and religious, will begin to lose cohesiveness and credibility after 2012., paving the way for a genuinely new age. If the Maya were right…. hang on for the real changes that should begin… with katun 13 Ahau which starts in 2032’ This same sentiment has been echoed by Don Alejandro, the head of the Mayan Council of Elders of Guatemala.
The Final Katun
The final katun in the sequence that must happen before the new cycle of the katuns begins again is 13 Ahau. This starts in 2032 and ends in 2052. It is the time from 2032 to 2052, that great earth changes may take place.
The translation from the codices about 13 Ahau that starts in 2032 is ‘Famine, plagues of locusts, and loss of rulers. The judgment of God’ Mr. Scofield goes on to elaborate on this katun.
‘This is a time of total collapse where everything is lost. It is the time of the judgment of God. There will be epidemics and plagues and then famine. Governments will be lost to foreigners and wise men and prophets will be lost.‘
It is my perception that the great crisis that many fear in 2012 may well start after 2032. An interesting note to this time period is that it did bring great revolution and change during the time period from 1776 to 1796.
There was great chaos, trauma and loss of lives and prosperity as the new nation, the United States of America was birthed. During this time period, there were a lot of problems, but, as we all know, something great came out of the upheaval.
The spiritual knowledge that is emerging and utilized now will act as a compass to guide us when the seas of life start to get bumpy after 2032.
The New Cycle
The new cycle of Katuns begins with Ahau 11 that starts in 2052. the prophecy for this Katun is grave.
‘Death from starvation. Great weeping and invading foreigners. Scant rains.‘
With this message, you can see that the dire predictions that many have given to 2012 may possibly start after 2032 and continue through the period from 2052 to 2072.
In his book, Signs of Time, Mr. Scofield gives correlations from history that show that events did occur that related to the Mayan predictions. Yet, even though these predictions sound negative, we have the power to strengthen ourselves and create positive outcomes for any situation on the planet.
What Can I Do
This is why it is important to start working with Mayan astrology now. As you connect to the light from the galactic center, you will be in tune with what the Maya felt was the source of all life. When you are in harmony with this source of all life, you will be in the right place, with the right people, at the right time to successfully navigate whatever may arise on our planet.
The ancient Maya have left us a great gift: the Tzolkin. Use it and you will be prepared for 2012 and beyond.
